Elect Glen Kirby to Oakland-Wawanesa Council

Top Concerns Among Ward Two Voters

POSTED

At campaign stops across our municipality, I ask farmers and acreage owners, “What does council need to work on?”

Everyone has an opinion and it’s surprising how often those opinions hit the same themes. From my discussions with residents in Ward Two, here’s the list of top concerns:

Council Behaviour
29%
Taxes
26%
Roads
25%
Amalgamation
9%
Water
4%
Building Permits/Development
4%
Happy - No Concerns
3%

That’s right. Nearly a third of the families I have met in Ward Two believe council’s behaviour is the most critical issue we face. One woman in the southeast said simply, “There’s too much drama.”

Many point the finger squarely at certain elected officials. Others wonder why the entire council can’t “get along like adults”, “check their egos at the door” and “gel to make amalgamation work”.

Taxes rank a close second on our list. Overall, Oakland property taxes have increased 35% since 2015 while Wawanesa taxes have dropped 20%. Acreage owners and farmers want taxation fairness. Read more about taxes here.

Roads follow closely behind taxes as a major concern in Ward Two. One in four voters say road maintenance and repair should be council’s top priority. Residents along Treesbank Road are especially unhappy.

Amalgamation, access to good water and property development are other specific concerns mentioned by residents.

Vote for Change

Clearly, Ward Two voters care about the state of our municipality and desperately want resolution to problems plaguing Oakland-Wawensa since amalgamation. What’s troubling is the number of residents exhausted after four years of council infighting, suggesting they aren’t going to vote because “it doesn’t make a difference.”

Your participation does make a difference. Please find the candidate best representing your wants and wishes, and vote. It’s important. Advance poll is Saturday, June 15 and election day is June 20.

Like you, I want solutions. If elected, I will work to restore respect and rural representation within the amalgamated municipality. But I’ve said many times on voters’ doorsteps, “Getting along doesn’t mean giving in.” Diplomacy will be key in representing Ward Two interests.
