The Race is Officially On!

I submitted my council nomination papers on Friday, which means the good folks in Ward Two of Oakland-Wawanesa will have to make a choice on June 20.

Neil Bok and I are seeking the vacant seat in Ward Two. More could still join the race because nominations are open until May 15. To all candidates running, I wish you a good campaign.

Ward Two is a real jewel in Oakland-Wawanesa. We have more residents than any other ward. The assessed value of our farms and homes is also worth more than any other ward. Farming families have worked the land for nearly 140 years. More recently, professionals employed in Brandon and other urban centres have found Ward Two a desirable – and affordable – location to live.

However, affordability is being threatened by consecutive years of property tax increases.

Council has hiked municipal spending by 24% since 2015, an average of 6% per year, which is triple the annual inflation rate. To pay for that new spending, council increased taxes in Ward Two and Ward Three (the two rural wards).

Rural property taxes have jumped 36% since 2015. That’s just the increase to cover municipal spending. Escalating school levies have pushed some Oakland tax bills even higher.

Council must control spending and find a fair tax solution to balance the property tax load between residents in Oakland and Wawanesa. Currently, Oakland pays 86% towards shared services with Wawanesa, despite having only 65% of the municipality’s population.

My Pledge

If elected, I will work for a fair tax solution. Fair taxation is important now and for the future.

High property taxes hurt farmers. High property taxes hurt acreage owners. High property taxes scare people away from Ward Two, limiting our growth and development. High taxes limit your future.

I’ll be door-knocking in May and June, and look forward to hearing from you about taxation and other issues. If you see me coming down your lane, call off the dog. I’m harmless!

A big thanks to family, friends and neighbours for signing my nomination papers. I appreciate your support and perspectives on what needs fixing in our municipality. I hope to serve you on council.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

Please, make an effort to vote. Municipal council has the most direct impact on our daily lives, more-so than the provincial or federal government. You have the power to select the people on council. Exercise your right. Vote for me. Vote for someone else. Just vote!

On election day, the polling station will be located in Nesbitt Hall. There’ll be an advance poll at Nesbitt Hall on Saturday, June 15. Or, you can cast your ballot at the municipal office in Nesbitt during regular office hours between May 23 and June 17, in a sealed envelope vote. Call the municipal office at 204-824-2666 if you require more information.

Best regards,
-Glen
