Meet Glen

Meet Glen

Hi, I’m Glen Kirby, Oakland-Wawanesa resident.

Originally from Souris, I have lived in southwest Manitoba for 25 years and in Oakland-Wawanesa since 2013, I’m a journalist and writer, which gives me an inflated sense of how much I really know.

I never looked good in hats.

Growing up a few houses away from the Swinging Bridge, I knew about the big world beyond our town by the foreign license plates parked along the street. From a young age, I was intrigued by media and communications. Good decisions require good information.

Dad was a municipal councillor so I got an early education in public service. In high school, I began writing for the Souris Plaindealer and providing reports to CKLQ. I studied journalism and advertising at Red River College and began my ‘professional’ career in 1980 at  CKX-FM.

At work, probably ordering pizza.

After stints at CKX and CKLQ, I headed west for media opportunities in Lethbridge, Red Deer and Lloydminster. I managed newsrooms for several years, and our work won a number of awards.

Back in Winnipeg at CBC-TV for a dozen years, I worked as a reporter, video-journalist, host and story producer. In the mid-2000s, I anchored the 6 pm news at CITY-TV and DJ’ed a program on Izzy Asper’s radio station.

I have served on volunteer boards in several communities, including a Winnipeg recreation district that merged with two others. So I know about the trials and tribulations of amalgamation.

Hey, it's me and Lloyd Robertson!

In 2004, I started my own media and communications company. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with dozens of clients including the Manitoba government, Canadian Cancer Society, Bell MTS, MuchMusic, Food & Beverage Manitoba, Brandon University, Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, MediaQ and Glacier Media.

In 2016, I launched Southwest Post – an online news and information source for six southwest municipalities including Oakland-Wawanesa.

My work is based on two values: providing people with information and giving a voice to those who need to be heard. And humour, whenever possible. OK, my work is based upon three values…
